3. Thermal

  • Sensible Heat: Heats or cools a medium (like molten salt, water, or rocks) and stores it in insulated tanks. Used in concentrated solar power plants and building HVAC.
  • Phase Change Materials: Stores energy in the latent heat of melting or freezing a material.

4. Chemical

  • Hydrogen (Power-to-Gas): Uses excess electricity to produce hydrogen via electrolysis. Hydrogen can be stored long-term and used in fuel cells, industrial processes, or as a clean fuel.

Applications by Timescale

  • Short-Duration (Seconds to Minutes): Frequency regulation, grid stability (Flywheels, some batteries).
  • Medium-Duration (Hours): Shifting renewable generation, peak shaving, backup power (Lithium-ion, flow batteries).
  • Long-Duration (Days to Seasons): Seasonal storage, full renewable integration (PHS, Hydrogen, advanced CAES, thermal).

  • Cost: Continued reduction in capital cost ($/kWh) is crucial for widespread adoption.
  • Performance: Improving energy density, cycle life, efficiency, and safety.
