When there is a fault inside the transformer and a large amount of gas is generated, when the pressure of insulating oil on the membrane disc is greater than the spring pressure, the transformer oil will be discharged when the opening force is reached, and the internal pressure of the transformer will rapidly reduce to the average value. The diaphragm disc returns to its original position under the pressure of the spring, and the opening time of the pressure relief valve is not more than 2ms.

Due to the limitation of the upper structure of the transformer oil tank, the pressure relief valve is usually installed around the top cover, as close to both ends of the oil tank as possible. When the pressure relief valve is installed directly above the winding, if the pressure of the winding is not enough, when the external short circuit occurs, the winding coil will be subjected to a strong current, forming a shock wave. If the pressure relief valve is installed just above the magnetic leakage duct, the pressure relief valve will act first. Generelt, the shock wave generated by the short circuit current is small. If the external fault disappears, the oil pressure of the pressure relief valve will also disappear, and then the pressure relief valve will automatically return to its original working state.
