Product Overview

Battery cells are the electrochemical building blocks of every battery system. Two decisions define a cell: chemistry (LFP, NMC, sodium-ion, LTO) and format (prismatic, cylindrical, pouch, blade). Chemistry sets voltage platform, energy density, cycle life, thermal risk, and temperature window. Format sets manufacturing method, module/pack integration path, and mechanical behavior. Neither can be optimized in isolation—a high-energy chemistry in the wrong format, or a robust format paired with an unsuitable chemistry, produces a cell that fails at system level.

Cells are supplied at component level. BMS, thermal management, electrical protection, and structural integration are implemented at module and pack level. This page indexes cells by chemistry and format; exact capacity, internal resistance, dimensions, and test-condition-specific cycle data are provided on individual product pages and datasheets.

Key Features

  • Chemistry defines the system envelope, not just the cell. LFP delivers cycle life and thermal stability at moderate energy density. NMC delivers energy density at the cost of liquid cooling, tighter BMS requirements, and a lower thermal-runaway threshold (~210°C vs. ~270°C for LFP). Sodium-ion trades ambient-temperature energy density for sub-zero operation and 0V storage capability. LTO trades energy density for fast charge and cycle life measured in tens of thousands of cycles.
  • Cycle-life figures are condition-bound and not cross-comparable. LFP at 6,000–7,000+ cycles, NMC at 1,500–3,000 cycles, sodium-ion at >8,000 cycles, and LTO at 6,000–45,000 cycles are measured at different temperatures, C-rates, and end-of-life thresholds. A single “cycle life” number without test conditions is not a procurement specification.
  • Temperature windows separate the chemistries in practice. NMC usability drops sharply above 45°C ambient and below −20°C. LFP operates to −35°C discharge on some commercial cells but charges only above −10°C. Sodium-ion covers −40°C to +65°C, with demonstrated sub-zero discharge without heating. LTO tolerates wider temperature ranges and high-temperature cycling better than graphite-anode chemistries.
  • Format determines integration cost and failure mode. Prismatic suits high volumetric packing and large single-cell capacity. Cylindrical enables automated laser/ultrasonic welding and standardized supply. Pouch maximizes gravimetric energy density but requires even compression across the cell face; uneven pressure causes delamination and capacity loss. Blade cells are LFP-only and designed for cell-to-pack integration, removing the module layer entirely.
  • Sodium-ion cells ship as non-dangerous goods and can be stored at 0V, eliminating maintenance charging during long storage and simplifying logistics compared with lithium-ion cells.

Format parameters: prismatic capacity typically spans 50–300+ Ah, with large-format ESS cells at 267–587 Ah and volumetric energy density up to 434 Wh/L. Cylindrical covers standardized sizes including 18650, 21700, 26650, and 4680. Pouch offers flexible dimensions and the highest gravimetric energy density in the NMC class (~240 Wh/kg). Sodium-ion prismatic and pouch cells are available at 50–300 Ah.

Certification and transport: UN 38.3 is the baseline transport requirement for lithium-ion cells. Sodium-ion cells from at least one supplier are classified as Non-Dangerous Goods (Class 9 Exempt) and can ship at 0V. IEC 62619/62620 apply where stationary or industrial use is claimed.

Typical Applications

  • Grid-scale & C&I BESS — LFP prismatic; cycle life, thermal stability, lowest LCOS
  • Long-duration storage (4–8 h) — large-format LFP prismatic (267–587+ Ah); fewer cells and connections per MWh
  • Long-range passenger EV — NMC prismatic / cylindrical / pouch; energy density drives range
  • Cost-driven EV, bus, truck — LFP prismatic / blade; $/kWh and cycle life suit high-utilization duty
  • Cold-climate storage & backup — sodium-ion prismatic / cylindrical; sub-zero discharge without heating penalty
  • Fast-charge heavy-duty & power buffer — LTO; 6-minute charge, 20,000+ cycles under 4C/4C
  • Two/three-wheelers & power tools — cylindrical (18650/21700/26650); standardization and low pack cost
  • Thin/space-constrained devices — pouch; highest gravimetric energy density, flexible dimensions

Installation & Maintenance Notes

  • Storage: −15°C to +45°C for lithium-ion (20–25°C optimal); long-term above 45°C accelerates calendar fade. Sodium-ion can be stored at 0V indefinitely without maintenance charging.
  • Pouch cells: require even compression across the full face; uneven clamping causes delamination. Torque fixtures in a cross-pattern.
  • Cylindrical cells: weld quality (penetration, pull strength, contact resistance) must be inspected in-line; a failed weld is a latent high-resistance joint, not an immediate open circuit.
  • Electrical safety: isolate DC bus before installation or maintenance; ground all racks and modules; no organic solvent cleaning.
  • Replacement: match chemistry, capacity class, and internal resistance band; mixing aged and new cells in the same string accelerates imbalance.

FAQs

Can I substitute LFP for NMC in an existing pack without redesign?

No. Voltage platforms differ (3.2V vs. 3.6–3.8V), so series count, BMS thresholds, and charger profile must change. Thermal design differs too.

Is a higher cycle-life number always better?

Only if the test conditions match your duty. Compare cycle life at the temperature, C-rate, and DOD the application will actually see, not at headline conditions.

Do sodium-ion cells require a different BMS?

Yes. The voltage window (~3.0V nominal) differs from LFP and NMC; BMS thresholds, balancing logic, and SOC algorithms must be re-parameterized. Do not assume a lithium-ion BMS will operate a sodium-ion string correctly without reconfiguration.
